Unlike Simon Jones whose career was halted by his injuries, Mohammad Asif was his own axe who cut down his career by committing some serious blunders. Pakistan at the time of Shoaib Akhter’s departure was missing an era where Wasim-Waqar were the shining stars and ruling the world with their incomparable bowling spells, Muhammad Asif quickly made an impression that he was all set to be called the new face of Pakistan. He repeatedly outclassed his opponents like Pietersen, Rahul Dravid, Laxman, AB De Villiers and Sangakara. His sharp inwsingers and outswingers were a real threat to any world Class batsman.
His famous performance was in Pakistan against India in Karachi where he took some valuable wickets at much needed time. Asif was found guilty among with 2 other players in Spot Fixing scandal. Muhammad Amir then made a come back after 5 years ban, but that was possible only because he was charged when he was 19 years old and just made an entry to international cricket. Mohammad Asif and Salman Butt on the other hand were 2 superstars with age of around 28 and didn’t had a decade of cricket ahead hence they barely had any chance to make a come back.
Mohammad Asif’s presence in World Cup and Test Matches would have brought Pakistan among top rankings but unfortunately he made some mistakes which will be a lifetime regret for him.
